Liverpool FC 2-0 Valencia CF

Valencia lose 2-0 at Anfield.  Carroll and Kuyt scored the goals for Liverpool.

Two defensive errors saw Valencia slip to defeat at Anfield.  A poor backpass from David Albelda gave Carroll a great opportunity, and the English striker put the ball in the net on the second attempt.

After Tino and Soldado had both come close to scoring, Liverpool sealed the game late on.  The Valencia defence failed to deal with an inswinging free-kick, and as the ball fell loose in the box, Dirk Kuyt was on hand to bundle it over the line.

Alves, Bruno, Rami, Topal, Jordi Alba, Pablo, Albelda, Parejo, Mata, Piatti and Jonas started the game. Miguel, Maduro, Mathieu, Tino Costa, Soldado, Bernat, Ever, Dealbert and Ricardo Costa all came in on the second half.

Poor performance from both sides. We were really awful in first half, Liverpool owned us in the middle. I dont know, did Liverpool players covered our guys so good that we couldn’t make more than two passes or did Emery try with some new tactic. Specially in first half I noticed that we tried with long crosses but unfortanetly unsuccessful.I put the most blame on Emery for first half, because he used Mehmet Topal as a central defender but we all know that he isn’t good there. If he had played him as a midfielder instead of Albelda things would be much better because that role as CMD suits him just fine. Anyway, like I said Albelda made a huge mistake and I am afraid that if he keeps playing so much he will many more similar mistakes. He is old, totaly different player that he was, I still respect him but I certain that his place is currently on the bench. Oh, I almost forgot, Parejo still didn’t convinced me. He has to work on his vision and passes. Every second Dani’s pass is wrong and we lost a lot of balls because of this. The only thing I’ve noticed on him that is good is that he steals many balls. If I go on second half, we’ve made some changes but didn’t made any big impact on the game, similar than the first half. But then when Banega came in, story went in totaly different way. I was really impressed by Ever’s performance today and I hope he continiues with it. Liverpool wasn’t better than us, they werent so dangerous, had few crosses inside the box but that was all. They’ve scored two really lucky goals. Today they’ve played with their strongest team, I think this is their last preparation game before the league starts. Now we must forget this defeat, learn something from it and think for the next match against Roma. I hope that Emery will play in this season with formation 4-2-3-1. Diego Alves, Alba-Rami-Costa-Miguel, Topal-Banega, Mata/Canales-Piatti-Pablo, Soldado. AMUNT VALENCIA!

i think topal did well as CB, just saying

    • Ximo

      Mostly agree with your post.

Main part I disagree with is about Topal.  I think he’s a better CB than Dealbert and Pardo. (Obviously we need to sign a new one.)  If we were desperate, I would rather play Topal at the back.

On the other hand, I think Topal is vital in defensive midfield.  We really need to get a new CB so Topal can play there instead of Albelda.

      • Valencian

No doubt that Topal is better than Pardo and Dealbert in CB position but he is superior as CMD, good as destructor, has good passes, few driblings. Anyhow, IMO Mehmet is ten times better than Maduro and Albelda. Emery had Ricardo Costa on the bench so I was angry that he didn’t use him or perhaps he could use Maduro instead of Topal.

did anybody think that our jerseys looked awful compared to liverpools, ours looked like a child made them the materials looked awful and the joma logo looked terrible i wish we stayed with nike or went to adidas, i mean our jerseys looked so unprofessional

    • moe

i dont see anything wrong with the kits,
i love the red one and the white one looks as good as allways

    • Ximo

Luckily, football is about scoring goals, and not a fashion show, hehe.

Seriously, I don’t care who makes our kits.  I just want as much money as possible.  The club needs it.

I only watched the second half and i was quite unimpressed. I haven’t been able to watch other games because i was on holiday. As Valencian said, Banega was the player that really stood out on the Valencia side. Most of the new signings only played the first half, so i think i only saw Rami and Alves. I can’t really say anything about Alves because he didn’t have much work anyway. I’ve noticed he tends not come forward for the ball. Rami on the other hand, is very tall and got many of the aerial battles. He also made some accurate long passes, which i cannot say for the rest of the team. Miguel has still got the class, but I’ve noticed he is quite slow and sometimes can’t do what he wants. Neither team played good (Note: Both teams are very young), but i must say Liverpool were slightly better.

It was indeed the last match before the league starts for Liverpool, and I think Daglish stressed the team to win. It was two lucky goals, and they dominated first half. I belive Unai had a more relaxing view at this game, because now he is trying to get playres in the pysical shape they need to be in, and not nessecary win the game. Even we did play poor, I belive that it easy could be a win for us. We have 2 more games left of pre-season, and I belive things is looking good, even with the liverpool defeat.

  • boncol

Poor performance but liverpool was not better than us, I’ve concerned with emery’s tactic, did some ridiculous tactic last seasom, I hope he find a suitable tactic soon

  • Cile

For once I missed Marchena. He’s old and slow now but he’d break Carroll’s leg with how raw and clumsy he still tends to be on moments. And that tit really deserved it today, dirty player with no class. Don’t know if there’s a LFC fan proud to have him.

    • Jafar

They are proud to have him but what did you expect they are English(no offence but I live in England as well )

  • Paco

Tino is the best. Sorry, just had to let it out.

  • EsP

Well, I belive things would be better at the back if Rami and R.Costa played together all game, and topal played at midtfield instead for Albelda.

  • mohanad

Banega is a beast! Maduro albedla out, wat did piatti do? Pablo? Jonas? Nothing..where iis aduriz?? Much beter than soldado, soldado is overrated.

  • mohanad

I forgot to mention how emery doesn’t seem to be able to handle big games, he never won a big game, I kno its friendly but team clearly stil does same mistakes, no improvement, and please for gods sake stop playing maduro, seriously wat does he do? Emery must find a way to get best out of banega cause obviously he’s our best player, aduurizzz where is he?

    • Ximo

      I wouldn’t call a pre-season friendly a big game.

I get your point though.  Only win over the big two was 3-0 against Madrid at Mestalla during Unai’s first season.  It’s a tough task, but that needs to change.  Even draws would be better than defeats.  We really need to start closing the gap.  Even if it’s by three points, it’s an improvement.

Aduriz is injured at the moment.

  • B.G

Horrible match in whole, but i choose to focus on the positive, which is that Banega was excellent!

Banega in form is at Xavi level, today i saw a glimpse of that again..

And this was only a pre-season game anyways, doesn’t mean much, we didn’t even play with our best 11.
Wouldn’t call it a friendly after seeing what Carroll did to Rami, but i’m glad Albelda got him back :P

  • B.G

My dream line-up for this season would have to be:

    Soldado
    Mata – Canales – Pablo
         Ever – Topal
Alba – Rami – Costa (preferably get a new defender)  - Miguel (a new right back wouldn’t hurt either)

Still not sure which GK i’d pick, Guaita and Alves are both very good :)

  • VCF

i think banega is back in old form, and i think unai must get back on old game passes in open space, and lot of movment not the fu cking long ball

    • Valencian

Yeah, I was so nervous when Valencia tried with long balls and neither one pass wasn’t good. Emery really missed the tactic yesterday, we’ve played too much on Diego Alves, passes back and we didn’t had any idea how to come to L’pool’s goal. I agree with you with ur ideal squad but I would rather play Piatti instead of Canales, just for now.

    • EsP

I still have faith in Parejo aswell! Dont write him of, I am sure he will shine for us, just wait to the season starts!
